2010 sees the release of an exciting new range of certificates from the Royal Horticultural Society. These are designed to offer students greater flexibility, allowing them to choose horticultural qualifications ideally suited to their career goals. We feel that the courses offer students more choice and great accessibilty. Level 3 courses in particular are now more suitable for distance learning students than ever, as there is no practical exam for the main certificates. In the past this has been a hurdle for some students. (The RHS will be offering standalone practical exams at Levels 1, 2 and 3, for students who would like to add this to their qualifications.)
The Royal Horticultural Society certificates are internationally recognised qualifications providing a broad-based understanding of horticultural techniques. They offer a well-respected qualification, ideal for students who would like:
- a route to employment in professional horticulture
- support for career development for those already working in horticulture
- a strong foundation for further learning or training
- as well as keen amateurs who would like to develop their understanding of horticulture further.
At Level 2 the RHS are offering two new certificates. The first examinations for these certificates will be in 2011, and Learning Curve are now taking enrolments for the new courses:
Principles of Garden Planning, Establishment and Maintenance
Principles of Plant Growth, Propagation and Development
At Level 3 the RHS are also offering two new certificates:
Principles of Garden Planning, Construction and Planting
Principles of Plant Growth, Health and Applied Propagation
Some existing students have been unsure what these changes will mean for them. Tutors are discussing the options individually with each of their students, as they have the opportunity, but we have also produced two useful information pages on our website to help current students consider the options and decide which is best for them :
Level 2 options for current students
Level 3 options for current students
Please note that if you decide you would like to sit one of the exams this summer, you will need to register with an examination centre by the 9th May. You can obtain full information on exam centres and registering for the exams from your tutor or admin.
